Colchester United Football Club is an English football team who, after finishing 2nd in the First Division will compete for the Championship in 2006/07.
The club was formed in 1937, and briefly shared their Layer Road home with the now defunct side Colchester Town F.C. They were first admitted to the league in 1950 and have remained a lower division club throughout their league history, bouncing between the third and fourth divisions. It wasn't until recent years that Colchester has been able to improve their stereotypically inconsistent play and beat some of the top-notch teams of the First Division.
Colchester United are perhaps best known for beating Don Revie's Leeds United team 3-2 in the 5th round of the FA Cup in 1971, spoiling Leeds' run for the FA Cup Championship.
