The Cyprus National Football Team was founded in 1934 and is controlled by the Cyprus Football Association.
The team, located on the third largest island in the Mediterranean, played its first international friendly with Israel in Tel Aviv, on July 23, 1949, just one year after becoming a member of FIFA. In November 1960, Cyprus took part in their first official match, earning a 1-1 draw against Israel in the first leg of qualifying for the 1962 FIFA World Cup. This international success was enough to earn Cyprus UEFA membership in 1962.
Cyprus has never made the finals of any major international tournament, but has played the role of spoiler in a number of incredible matches over the years. Qualifying for the 2000 European Championships, Cyprus beat mighty Spain 3-2. On October 7th, 2006, Cyprus produced another major upset, beating a severely weakened Republic of Ireland 5-2 at home. They later caused another surprise by holding World Cup semi-finalists Germany to a 1-1 draw at home on November 15th, 2006.
