The name Maccabi has strong connections with the club's Hebrew identity and refers to the ancient Maccabei warriors, taken from Zionist tradition. Maccabi's first championship was won in 1937, and up until 1979 they enjoyed at least one league championship every five years. Since 1992, Maccabi has earned four more notable league victories, the last one being in 2003, bringing their total to 18. Their vitories in the National Cup total 21, the first having come in 1929 and the most recent in 2002.
Maccabi has always furbished the Israeli National team with a large number of players, including the historic participation in the 1970 Mexico World Championships. This team of the traditional yellow/blue colors was the first to be admitted into the European Competition in 1992. This season, after coming close to victory on three occasions in qualifying for the final phase of the Champions League, Maccabi has gained access to the most prestigious European Club Competition, defeating HJK Helsinki and Paok Salonicco.
